This rarity complements the previous item, the Meissen ‘Butter Cooler’. A rare survivor, this Meissen butter curler would have been used on the Continental aristocratic table. It is seen below with a Meissen spoon of the same period – another rarity.
Unmarked (there isn’t much space for one!) it dates to circa 1760. The attribution is based on the quality of the piece: another of these rarities is in our 2014 exhibition, but is clearly not of the same quality, and not Meissen.
These rarities are all a part of our 2014 ‘Recent Acquisitions’ Exhibition, opening in our Geelong premises on April 12th.
